FORMAT DECISIONS

Choose the right file format

Start with what the receiving app needs. Then compare compatibility, quality, transparency, editability, and expected size.

Need broad compatibility?

Choose JPG for photographs, PNG for graphics that need transparency, PDF for fixed documents, MP3 for portable audio, and CSV for simple tables.

Need the smallest useful file?

Use WebP or AVIF for modern web images, MP3 for audio, and ZIP for compressible documents. Changing format does not guarantee a smaller result.

Need to keep every detail?

Choose PNG for pixel graphics and WAV for uncompressed audio. A lossless output cannot restore information already removed from a compressed source.

Practical format comparison
FormatBest forStrengthWatch for
JPGPhotos, email, broad compatibilitySmall files and universal supportLossy; no transparency
PNGScreenshots, graphics, editingLossless pixels and transparencyOften larger for photos
WebPModern websites and sharingGood size with transparency supportSome older apps reject it
AVIFModern web deliveryExcellent compression and HDR capabilityEncoding and app support vary
HEIC / HEIFApple photo storageEfficient, high-quality phone photosMany Windows and web workflows reject it
SVGLogos, icons, diagramsScales without becoming blurryNot suitable for ordinary photos
PDFFixed documents and page sharingConsistent layout across devicesHarder to edit; scans need OCR
DOCXEditable word-processing documentsRich formatting and collaborationLayout extraction to text is limited
MP3Portable music and voiceSmall and widely playableLossy audio
WAVAudio editing and archival workflowsUncompressed and broadly editableVery large files
ZIPPackaging several filesKeeps names and folders togetherDoes not improve already compressed media
CSV / TSVTables and data exchangeSimple and spreadsheet friendlyNo formatting or formulas
JSONAPIs and structured dataNested, machine-readable dataNot naturally tabular
XMLFeeds and older integrationsAttributes, namespaces, and schemasVerbose and complex

Common conversion paths

Choose a path based on the destination rather than assuming that a newer format is always better.

Three checks before converting

  1. Confirm the destination app accepts the output format.
  2. Decide which properties must survive: transparency, animation, selectable text, metadata, page order, or audio fidelity.
  3. Open the downloaded result before deleting or sharing the original.

Use the tool directory to see only conversions currently implemented and published.
